What we are doing now

Turning responsible choices into normal pub practice

Low-carbon travel

Shared e-bike - Used by our employees for commuting and local errands replacing journeys that could otherwise be made by car.

Cycle hub - Secure cycle storage, a repair station, e-bike charging point and safety equipment make cycling practical for staff and visitors.

Free support - Bike-repair facilities are available to staff and customers, supported by free Dr Bike maintenance sessions.

Customer encouragement - We promote walking, cycling and riding to the pub and plan incentives for organised walking and cycling groups.

Resource efficiency and circularity

Waste and utilities - Food and drink wastage logs, stock controls, purchasing data, utility records and recycling help us identify losses and improve performance.

Refill rather than replace - SNOAP dispensers make liquid soap on site from concentrated solid bars and water, reducing single-use bottles, storage and transport of water-heavy products.

Materials with another life - Our durable outdoor furniture made from recycled scaffolding boards shows that reclaimed materials can be attractive and commercially practical.

Local purchasing - We source ingredients from local farms and nearby suppliers wherever practical, supporting regional jobs and retaining spending in the local economy.

People make it work

Sustainability is led by the company director and embedded operationally by the landlord Michael and senior staff through purchasing, training, maintenance and daily practice. Every employee shares responsibility for conserving resources, reducing waste and suggesting improvements. Our employees are local; many grew up in the village and live within walking distance, strengthening local knowledge while reducing commuting.

Using the pub’s reach to make sustainable choices easier for everyone

Sharing and reuse

Plant exchange and donations - Residents can share surplus plants, preventing waste while encouraging growing, biodiversity and neighbourly participation.

Repair cafés - We plan to bring people together to exchange practical skills and repair household items rather than discard them.

Visible learning - Staff explain and demonstrate initiatives so they can act as sustainability ambassadors in the community.

Our next chapter

Back-garden regeneration - We aim to revive the disused garden with restored second-hand pieces or durable furniture made from reclaimed and recycled materials, plus wildlife-friendly planting.

Renewable energy - Subject to planning permission and feasibility, we hope to install solar panels to generate renewable electricity.

Lower-emission travel - We are exploring an EV charging point alongside continued investment in walking and cycling facilities.

Measuring progress

We review utility use, food and drink wastage, stock variance, recycling, refill use, local purchasing, sustainable journeys, staff participation and community feedback. Management compares performance over time and adjusts purchasing, training and investment. We are strengthening our measurement of e-bike journeys and single-use plastic bottles avoided, ensuring future decisions are guided by evidence as well as ambition.
